[regarding forwarding of an email as an attachment]

And what if you want to forward only a portion of a message? What if
you don't want to forward the headers of the original message?

If I want to do that then I will forward as text and trim text as I
would when I use the reply function.

And finally, if you forward a message and include the headers of the
original message, there is a good chance that you are violating the
privacy and trust of the person who sent you the original message. I'd
say that unless you have that person's express permission to forward
that person's email address and name (which are part of the headers),
you are violating that person's trust and privacy.

Well lots of forwarded messages I recieve have a huge chain of
address information included because people have not trimmed it.
When I forward an email as text I trim appropriately, taking into
account privacy issues. Sometimes I want to forward an email to
myself at another address so there is no privacy issue (you can't
violate your own privacy). Other times I receive an email that was
sent to me by mistake and I might want to forward it to the intended
recipient. Sometimes privacy is not an issue for other reasons, but
if it is I can forward as text, trimming sensative info whether
that be in the headers or the body.

Email is useful due to its ubiquity and MIME is useful because
it allows sending data as attachments. Now that I think about it
the ability to forward emails as attachments is extremely useful.
The most ovious case is perhaps where I receive an email at one
address but I really wanted to get it at another address. By
forwarding it as an attachment I can then detach it at the other
end and save it to a folder where it will appear as an email
from the sender, not as an email from me - this solves so many
email management issues that I am surprised I had never seriously
thought about it before:-)

Fortunately mutt supports this. I have edited my .muttrc to
set it as the default but I can trivially override it if I
want to attach as text. I am a happy bunny!
