I'm having the same problem, but I'm using Toast 7.1.2.
I was in the process of making a backup CD, when it crashed, but would
not quit, the finder kept saying application not responding, I had to
force shut-down my Mac to clear it.
Why wouldn't you just Force-Quit the Toast application?! Force
shutting down your entire computer because a single application was not
responding seems like overkill.
Next I thought OK I'll trash the pref's and try again, but this didn't
work either, I had to once again force restart my Mac.
How are you force shutting down your Mac? Are you aware that pulling
the plug or holding the power button down to shut down can corrupt your
file system?
3rd time a charm, not on your life, I next removed and deleted
anything with Toast, or Roxio on it and re-installed the app to try
again, but, that's right, "application not responding", I had to force
shut-down my Mac once again. I removed once again Toast and ran Spring
Cleaning looking for any leftover files, but can't find any. Somewhere
there must a be a file(s) that is causing it to hang that I can't find
to help clear this problem. Has anyone who has had this problem gotten
it fixed?
When exactly does Toast become unresponsive - as soon as you launch it,
or only after you perform certain steps in Toast?

Answers to Jolly Rogers question -
Question 1: Each time the app failed to respond I attempted using both
the DOCK "Froce Quit" and the Apple+Option+Escape key combination to
force quit Toast, and each time it would not quit.
Question 2: By force shutting down my Mac I do not mean to say I was
literally pulling the plug, I first attempted to tell it using the
finder to Shutdown, or Restart, but because Toast would not quit even
after trying to force it, I would then press and hold the power on/off
button until my computer turned off, I would then wait about 30 to 60
seconds and turn it back on.
Question 3: The application would become unresponsive as soon as the
Toast icon stopped bouncing in the Dock. I would then wait for a few
minutes to see if the application window would pop up, and all I would
get was the spinning wait cursor.
