We have an Imac running OS 10.4.7 that is used by three people, me and my two daughters.

I have the admin. account and both daughters have standard accounts. In my account and one of the other accounts you double click to open the hard drive, a CD, anything and it opens as expected. However, in the third account you can't get anything to open by double clicking on it. You must select it, then open it by using the open button in the finder's file menu.

How does one fix this account so that you can open items by simply clicking on them?

Adjust the mouse buttons "Double-Clock Speed" setting located in
the "Mouse" settings sub-panel of the "Keyboard & Mouse" panel of
the System Preferences.

Thanks. That's exactly what the problem was. Hard to believe that you could adjust it the point where it longer worked. A poor design that allows users to do mildly dangerous stuff.

No, it does work!

You're just double-clicking outside the settings adjusted speed. All you needed was to slow down or speed up the double clicking! Not everyone has the same finger dexterity.

On the three Macs I own, I can put that setting all the way in either direction and my usual double-click still works.
It shocked me to read this solution was valid!
