Mark, the point you're missing in all of this is that, as Mac users, we
run into sites that don't work properly for us. It's less & less common
these days, but it was much worse in the past.
What does the fact that you're using a Mac have to do with this? You're
whining on about the fact that one of my sites used not to work in browsers
with JavaScript disabled - that would have been the case no matter what
operating system the browser was running on, obviously!
You're still missing the point.
The point is, I'm trying to help you understand that a person browsing
the internet in their own manner is likely to feel happy about the
manner in which they're doing it. Running into a site that excludes
them makes them less likely to go out of their way to read your content.
That's the point. Period.
When I run into a site that doesn't work because the author chose a
proprietary technology (like ActiveX, for example) it's very frustrating
because of the presumption is that everyone uses Windows.
Again, I don't think you're in full possession of the technical facts here.
ActiveX is not proprietary to Windows per se - it's proprietary to Microsoft
Internet Explorer, just like client-side VBScript is. For the record, I have
never ever used either of those technologies on a public website.
You're being defensive here -- when people say "for example", it's *an
example*; generally not exactly the same as the case being discussed.
This occurs less & less frequently today, but it's still annoying and
makes me wish I could say something to the author. In this case, you're
not using a technology that's inaccessible to Mac users, so you're not
quite in the same boat, but your attitude is the same, and that's
frustrating.
I have a feeling that your real frustration here lies in the fact that
you're not able to label me as another developer who doesn't give a damn
about Mac users, because my initial post was actually asking for assistance
in getting my site to display in Safari the same way it does in other (Mac)
browsers, specifically with regards to Safari's apparent lack of support for
CSS on buttons. Again, this is perhaps not too surprising, given your
nickname...
You're absolutely wrong. My frustration lies exactly where I initially
stated it -- in your attitude.
For the record:
1) I care not a whit about CSS-colored buttons in Safari
2) I don't use Safari, but Firefox
3) I'm using Ubuntu Linux
4) ... on an x86 laptop
Offending them by making them feel inferior based on their browser choice
won't help your cause.
Oh for heaven's sake! How on earth can (even) you possibly find it offensive
to tell people who are still using IE for Mac that their browser has been
discontinued by its vendor, and offering them a choice of hyperlinks to
download and install one of seven other Mac browsers?
For the record, I completely took on board Paul Sture's recommendations to
make the site friendlier to people who choose to browse without JavaScript
support. He seemed perfectly satisfied with the changes I made.
Maybe it's time for you to get that chip off your shoulder...
You're quite defensive and try to agitate me by taking personal jabs at
me while I'm trying to help you.
At the end of the day, it's your band you're trying to promote -- I'm
not sure you're doing a good job of it here.
