Re: Printing to an HP 5MP from OS X



I have a client who is using OS 10.3.x and she insists on hanging on
to an old HP LJ 5MP. which doesn't have an ethernet port. She had a
dayna etherprint box for the longest time which was working fine then
the box finally died.

I couldn't find a replacement box as I guess they don't make them any
more but someone told her the Asantetalk Ethernet to Localtalk box
wou> be a replacement. She ordered one and then emailed me that she
couldn't see the printer in the Printer Setup Utility. Long story
short the Mac can't see the 5MP in order to create a new queue for it.

She's about an hour drive for me so I'm going there this weekend but
anyone know if the Asantetalk box is just a functional as the Dayna
box? I want to have as much info as I can before I head out.

I have an HP 5P that my son-in-law (a very successful computer
consultant) gave me when he got a new Dell color laser.

He told me that the essential difference between a 5P and 5MP is that
the latter contains a network card (Ethernet).

I also have an AsanteTalk but I know nothing about the dayna etherprint
box.

I have a Dell PC (my wife has another Dell), two B&W G3s, a Classic II,
and a Personal LaserWriter.

The AsanteTalk enables me to interconnect my Ethernet network with my
AppleTalk network and everything works well.

But because it does not have an Ethernet network card, my HP 5P is
connected directly to my Dell.

I do not know if it would work via AppleTalk to the printer LocalTalk
port because I have been unable to find the appropriate printer drivers.


Now if the 5MP has the Ethernet card, as it should have, you ought to be
able to access it via Ethernet--IF you can find Mac drivers for the 5MP.

The reason I have not bought a network card is that HP considers the
5P/5MP to be obsolete and no longer provides cards or drivers for them.

Even used they cost more than some of the new laser printers.
