Once you have the username and password set up you can command-q out. Or

can force-quit out at any time, including before you have a username and

you
can do it.

I know you prefer not to believe me,

Incorrect. I don't 'prefer not to believe you'. I prefer to believe my
experience with every version of OS X I've ever installed on hundreds of
Macs
going back to OS X 10.1.x. Your statements contradict direct personal
experience, repeated over and over and over, over a period of a half
decade.
This means that one of two things is correct:

Since you mention OS X 10.1.x, please stop attacking David. Once was
fine: repeated attacks are not.

Where's the attack? I'm stating facts.

My experience of a brand new iBook with 10.1 was pretty similar to
David's story now, with the exception that I already had my own ADSL and
modem connections at home.

My experience of a brand new eMac with 10.1 was as I've said. My experience
with several B&W and beige G3s retrofitted with 10.1 was as I've said. Ditto
several iMac G3s. Etc. One of the beige G3s and the eMac _couldn't_ have been
connected to the internet at the time I did the install even if I'd wanted
them to be connected as I didn't have access to a network and the phone
system was down at the time. I completed the install and then, later,
connected and did the registration.

I repeat: his contention that you have to connect to the internet and
register as part of the install is contrary to several years experience going
back to 10.1. This is a fact and will remain a fact no matter who likes it or
doesn't like it. I know this is so 'cause I did it. It was not necessary to
register to do the install. It is still not necessary to register to do the
install. Sorry if you don't like it, but facts are facts and will remain
facts no matter who dislikes them.

But in those days OS X was an unknown quantity to me, so I chose to try
the installation without any physical connection.

It *froze* on me, to the extent I had to removed it from both the mains
*and* take the battery out to proceed.

Intriguing. I had no problems whatsoever with any of the machines I installed
10.1 on. (10.0 was a different story, but then 10.0 was simply not ready for
prime time.)

Did the tiny booklet that came with the system tell me about CMD-Q or
Force-Quit - no it definitely did not.

I can't remember if the docs mentioned it at the time. I do know that I
simply figured that command-q would work 'cause command-q had always quit
running applications before. I tried it, and it worked.

I don't know which version of 10.1.x you were installing. I do know that
10.1.5 had sufficient... differences... from previous versions that Apple saw
fit to issue this: <http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106888>

There was a known error when setting up OS X 10.1 _Server_ if TCP/IP wasn't
set up correctly, as noted in
<http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106532>, but this error was
not present in plan OS X 10.1.

And all this crap about free wi-fi connections I read here. David
clearly told us that it cost so many Euros per hour for a connection.

I certainly said nothing about free wifi connections. You may be thinking of
someone else. Alternatively, please show where I said anything about free
wifi.

We still don't know exactly what kind of a system he had:

o - Was it a German one, with the quirks of that keyboard?

Could be. Irrelevant if so, though.

o - If so, I'd like to bet that no key on his keyboard actually says
"CMD" or "Option".

My keyboard lacks keys saying 'cmd'. It does have two with an apple and a
little Ikea symbol...

My keyboard also lacks keys saying 'option'. It does have keys saying 'alt'.

Try and identify which keyboard I have. Hint: it didn't come from Apple.

o - Did he get a version which gave him the option of installation
languages?

Every copy of OS X I've seen (except 10.0.x and the Public Beta, and maybe
even those, I've mercifully forgotten most of my experiences with them) had
multiple language support. There were, and still are, applications designed
specifically to remove excess localisations.

and so on...

Please do elaborate. I find your errors fascinating.

1 I've been Doing It Wrong(tm) over a period of _years_, despite which all
of
the installs I've done have worked;

2 _you_ are Doing It Wrong(tm).

No, you simply assume that we all have the US version, and the
facilities available there.

Incorrect, given that I've only been in the US for two years and prior to
that most certainly did not use the US version! (Hint: just 'cause I
currently post from an American address does NOT make me an American!)

My comments stand. I've been doing it that way for _years_, in three
different countries, and using Macs localised for numerous places.
