I know you prefer not to believe me, but what I described is what
happened. I don't recall whether I had got so far as putting in user
name and password, I think not as I hit the loop pretty right after the
intro and it was all downhill from then on.

Cmd-Q most definitely didn't work at the point I was stuck. Well, it
did, but - as I wrote elsewhere - when I hit it I just got a message
saying I hadn't finished setting up my account with the choice of
either shutting down or returning to the loop.

In the end, of course, I chose "Shut Down" and - instead of calming
down - sat down and began to rant. Which gave others the chance to
rant back so all in all quite a lot of steam was let off which is no
bad thing where ill-mannered computers are concerned :-)
