already right?
Right. Also, separating functions makes troubleshooting easier. If you
think there's a problem with the router, you can connect directly to the
modem.
Just one data point, but I've been happy for years with a Cayman
modem/router (4 Ethernet ports) that came with our original DSL
installation.
The Cayman unit sits in a closet near my desk with one of its ports
connected by 100' or so of Cat 5 cable to the very earliest Apple
Airport model, which is located in the middle of the house and serves 4
or 5 laptops all over the house.
Our elderly, Ethernetted hp LaserJet 6MP printer (highly recommended)
sits in the same closet, cabled directly to another of the router ports,
ergo accessible remotely to everyone in the house. Obviously, two ports
still left for add'l peripherals.
Helpful feature: I can see the lights on the Cayman unit from my desk
chair, ergo can tell from the various panel lights if the DSL link is
live and also if there's traffic on the two connected ports. On the
rare occasions when the DSL service fails I can also monitor the
distinctive sequence of flashes as the modem attempts to, and usually
eventually does, reestablish connection and re-sync -- very helpful in
knowing what's going on.
