G4 OSX: swap single->dual cpu: kernel panic

For my PowerMac G4 AGP 400Mhz I bought a used Apple dual 450 cpu.
The Mac'en runs troublefree with the original single 400 Mhz.
It won't work with the dual after swapping. I can't reinstall with the dual cpu.
Having swapped to the dual, I get the message in four languages 'You need to restart you computer'. Rebooting ends with either the stopsign, or the timeren runs indefenitely, or the computer freezes solid after a short time.
If I boot in single user (apple + s) it gets interesting:
----
Latest stack backtrace for cpu1
....
....lotsa exceptions and hexvalues...
....
Darwin Kernel Version 7.0.0:
....date...
panic: We are hanging here...
----
I mostly gets this for cpu1, sometimes for cpu0.
The Mac has the nessesary ASIC rev. 7, and same firmware version as in the Mac the dual cpu came from.
On one of my attempts, I had installered a borrowed OSX for a Powerbook G4, using my single cpu, updated via apple.com, swapped to the dual and after a couple reboots made it work. However, the cpu ressource thingy indicated it was running on cpu0 only.
At first, I thought it might not utilize both cpu's all the time.
I happily downloaded losa software software, which worked just fine.
After a reboot, It no longer worked, and this is where I've been since (+ a number of experiments...).
Having lotsa PC/Unix experience, but not being a Mac expert, it seems to me it may be a hardware difference from the G4 the dual cpu came from, to the one I have, or the cpu may have been damaged during shipping.
Anyons seen this before?
