A matte screen looks more geeky. If you want to look more web 2.0 and nerdy at the coffee shop, you need a matte screen. Glossy screens are more pretty. If you want to look like an arty but tech-savvy power-user you want a glossy screen.
Now that chunky black framed spectacles are common for both groups, the laptop screen is now the most important signifier.
As an aside, I'm about to set up a petition for Apple to only provide opaque screens. This is a necessary security measure that currently can only be satisfied with a hammer.
