I just downloaded the OS update 10.4.7, and when I tried to restart my
PowerBook, it wouldn't boot. It's now stuck at the point where I have

the bottom.

Force a reboot. If the problem persists, force another reboot, start up
from your startup DVD/CD and run Disk Utility from it to repair your
disk. (Run "repair disk" repeatedly until it reports no errors.)

If that doesn't solve it, boot from the harddisk again but in Safe Mode
(by holding the Shift key). If the problem disappears, but returns after
the next (normal) reboot, the cause is probably a faulty third-party
kernel extension.

It's a PowerBook from 2004 that doesn't have the new Intel
processor, and I wonder if that's the problem.

Why on earth would it?

The question is -- what
do I do now. I'm afraid to turn it off and try to reboot again,
because I once messed up the hard drive of another mac by interrupting
to boot-up process.

Unlikely. At its worst a forced reboot can mess up the file system (and
thus the data) doing that, not the disk itself. And since you have a
good backup anyway (right?), you can always retrieve lost data from that
backup.

What do I do? Is there any way I can back back to
where I was before I downloaded the update?

Only by reinstalling from scratch (well, an Archive & Install followed
by running all updates). And *if* that does solve the problem it will
only be by coincidence (well, more or less).
