One day, six years ago (maybe 7?) I came back from a two week vacation
and the internal 80meg hard drive my Performa 460 would not boot up, or
show up in any way. I limped for a week on an external Har Drive and
bought my present B&W G3-350.
Eventually I realized I was missing four and a half years of Quicken
entries, which had not been backed up because for some reason. I had
lots of stuff backed up, but not that.
I kept the old performa on the off chance I might need to try and
recover that data some day. That day has come (an audit)
Now comes the question....I have a SCSI card for my G3, and I think I
have the 50 pin connector that fits the Quantum Hard Drive in the
Performa....but I am thinking I don't want to try plugging that into my
G3 with Sys 10.3
Jonathan-
If the drive would not boot the Performa, it may not be readable by
another machine. You have to try it to see.
One trick I've heard of, is to remove the HD, put it in your freezer
overnight, let it warm up to room temperature, and try it again in the
Performa.
If this works, it may only be a temporary reprieve, so copy the data to
another machine ASAP. If the Performa does not have Ethernet capability,
then your SCSI approach may be the best way. An external SCSI enclosure
would be desireable, but you might be able to use the Performa's power to
operate the HD, while using your makeshift SCSI cable to connect to the
card in the other machine.
