Years ago I saw a comparison chart and the conclusion was to keep the
disk cache in the region of 1 MB. Increasing it to much more than that
affected performance negatively as it would take longer to search
through the disk cache.

In those days Adobe's recommendation for Photoshop was to set the disk
cache to 128K max.

However I doubt that experimenting with the size would ever make a
noticable difference.

Well, if the system will be happy, and perform at peak, with just 1MB,
then I'm all for it!

Photoshop is a separate issue, and I'm not sure what exactly you mean
by its disk cache, unless you're talking about assigning a scratch disk,
in which case I have a 1GB partition on my external HD dedicated to that.

Martin is correct. Adobe recommended setting the SYSTEM disk cache to
its minumum when using Photoshop. The idea was, IIRC, to allow PShop to
handle all its own caching and scratch space with as little
interference from the OS as possible.
