Wireless networking has improved with the latest version of Ubuntu. Of
course, it's not anywhere near as easy as MacOS X, but it's a big
improvement over earlier versions of Ubuntu. I can actually use my WPA
wireless access point, with some coaxing.

Sure has. My partner just today finally got the updated Ubuntu to see
our wireless network and connect using WPA, instead of being restricted
to Ethernet. After over a year of WPA not working with Ubuntu (my Mac
used it from day one, as did Windows).

A miracle, WPA on Linux without pain?

(Actually, early on you had to download a special patch to get
windows to work, as it wasn't part of their normal windows
update process)

Does it work with broadcom 54G wireless systems? That has
always been one of the most difficult to get working with Linux.
If it does, I'll upgrade my Notebook to the latest Ubuntu,
otherwise it's of no value for that system.

Linux makes a great server, but it can often be a right pain for the
desktop, or the end user.

Absolutely correct. Given the shortage of internal storage in
every Mac (other than the insane Xserve line), a Linux box as a
central storage solution makes a great deal of sense. You can
configure a system with a cheap chassis that will hold a lot of
drives, a gigabit ethernet adapter, and RAID 5 support is easy,
instead of almost impossible to obtain like on OS X.

Yes, I agree Linux is getting better all the time.

True. Another 10 years or so it may be ready for a desktop user
replacement. Today, it's a great server, and a techie box, but
not for the masses or someone with a complex workflow, like an
architect, pro photographer or pro film/multimedia work, etc.

For web browsing, email, basic use, or of course development
work it's adequate.
