HELP PLEASE

I have an iMac running OS 10.4.6, 1.5 meg ram. Everything has been
working great for past 3-months. I haven't added any new programs, etc.
I've been using Toast 7 to copy some of my movies and CD's. Everything
worked fine, then all at once, Toast hangs up when I insert a CD or DVD,
it can't seem to detect the drive. If I take the CD or DVD out of the
drive, it un-freezes and seems to work fine. I have two CD/DVD drives,
get same result with either. However CD's and DVD's play fine in either
drive.
I've un-installed Toast and re-installed, get same result.
Also at this same time my Mac has got considerably slower to boot up.
The little pin wheel used to rotate about 10 times before going on to
the blue screen, now rotates 40 to 50 times.
I've run disk utility, also Onyx to repair permissions, delete cache,
etc. Nothing seem to help. Once the computer boots up, everything
seems to run as usual, except for Toast.
Would appreciate any suggestions, Thanks, Jim
.
