Re: Recovering File Vault - Hard Drive Crash

* Andy McAllister (2006-05-29):
Thanks for the hdiutil suggestion Andre - it ends up that Data Rescue
II says "36 GB" for my sparseimage file, but after it's done rescuing
the file, the sparesimage on disk is only "22 GB." So the image wasn't
recovered in full, it seems. Anyone experienced this before?

Mountpoint and mountroot would probably both work according to the man
file for hdiutil.

I had a little trouble getting hdiutil to take my password. Found that
I have to do it this way:
echo "password" | hdutil attach -stdinpass -mountpoint /tmp/fv/
/Users/youruser/youruser.sparseimage

Problem is, when I use that, I get an error "Authentication Failed." I
believe this is also related to the recoverd file size discrepency.

I also got a tip from the Apple support forums. Apparently I can
(simply) double click the sparseimage file in finder and it will prompt
for a password. Then it will extract all the files to a mountpoint,
and I could copy said files to a safe directory, unencrypted.
Unfortunately, neither of the things worked for the above reason.

I have read much hailing the Data Rescue II tech support team, so
perhaps I will have to try them after the holiday is over.

Did you also try the FV master password?
