That's only true for CDs. The DVD spec places the metallic layer closer to
the surface of the disc. This makes it easier for the laser to focus on
the smaller pits, and easier to make 2-sided discs. So for single-sided
DVDs, scratches on the label side will be less harmful than scratches to
the non-label side.
