Someone please HELP. I need my connection back... Jim
Sounds like (on the G3) either file sharing has been turned off or
your
Users & Groups settings have been changed.
John... thanks. I don't even get that far. I know it sounds like
something in the G3 has changed but I don't see anything.
I hit a brick wall saying server is nowhere to be found, server
failed
to respond or it times out with a -36 error (operation could not be
completed because some data could not be read or written)... Jim
Finally found culprit... after struggling with this for several weeks,
including reinstalling OS a couple of times, etc, forcing the Belkin
router to create a new DHCP lease solved the problem... Jim
You had a network connection problem and it took you two weeks to figure
out to restart your router?? Why did you reinstall the OS before you
restarted your switch/router?
If your home router is a DHCP server for your LAN, there is a button in
the Mac system preferences network control panel to renew the lease. If
it is the WAN side of the home router then there should be a way in the
router control software to do the same thing on the Internet provider
side.
Thanks... mine was a LAN problem as I don't even have WAN connected. I
saw the button to renew the lease and pushed it... several times during
trying to solve the problem. Never did see one in Mac OS 9... even
looked again after reading your post.
One question... on a home network, is it better to renew lease at some
frequency or leave it "forever"?
Thanks again for your comments... Jim
I didn't know you were using OS9. I assumed you were using OS10 but I
expect that there is a new lease button somewhere in the network control
panel for OS9.
I don't think it is a problem to leave the lease forever as its just a
IP address. The computer should ask for a new lease every time it is
rebooted or started up. If the router is shut off or reset then the DHCP
server in the router might not know what computers are on the network so
you should have each computer request another lease in that event. If
you power the router and computers off then on you should power on the
router first so the DHCP sever is up before any computer is power on and
makes a lease request.
