Someone please HELP. I need my connection back... Jim

Sounds like (on the G3) either file sharing has been turned off or
your
Users & Groups settings have been changed.

John... thanks. I don't even get that far. I know it sounds like
something in the G3 has changed but I don't see anything.

I hit a brick wall saying server is nowhere to be found, server
failed
to respond or it times out with a -36 error (operation could not be
completed because some data could not be read or written)... Jim

Finally found culprit... after struggling with this for several weeks,
including reinstalling OS a couple of times, etc, forcing the Belkin
router to create a new DHCP lease solved the problem... Jim

You had a network connection problem and it took you two weeks to figure
out to restart your router?? Why did you reinstall the OS before you
restarted your switch/router?

My friend... I restarted the router countless more time than I can
longer count. Too bad you were not here to advise.

Thanks... (tongue in cheek) for your feedback when I first posted... Jim

I am unclear then ... restarting the router and Mac should have cleared
the DHCP lease. Was the lease issue on the ISP side of your router?

if it should... it didn't because I restarted and rebooted the router
numerous times. No matter what I did... the server I was trying to
connect to was never present to connect to by IP address or by the
server browser. No matter what I did... problem would not go away.

During process... Belkin replaced router. This did not solve problem
either. When I would ping IP address, response was "send to: Permissions
denied".

What finally put me on the eventual track of solving problem an article
I found that said:

<<
The most common reason for "permission denied" errors is that one's AFS
tokens have expired. You can use the tokens command to see the AFS
tokens that you hold. If you do not have valid tokens, you can run kinit
to authenticate and get new tokens. If you do have valid tokens, you
should double-check that you are in the correct ACLs for the directories
that you are trying to access. Note that if you are added to an AFS
group, you will need to re-authenticate before you can use the
permissions for that group.

I had no idea how to run "kinit" so I kept looking... eventually getting
to one of the Apple discussion groups where others were having "token"
problems. Finally one of the messages suggested running "sudo arp -da
<return> for dealing with a corrupt address resolution protocol of some
sort. I did... but problem remained.

Later I changed router lease from "forever" to "half hour" which is what
I call "forcing a new lease" and the DHCP assigned address for the
'puter running Mac OS 9 changed. Not only did I have access to it via
its IP address, but it showed up in the server browser. Also... for the
first time in a couple of weeks, I was able to successfully ping the
other 'puter.

I have fairly good troubleshooting skills but network is not one of
them. I posted in different newsgroups but response(s) were slim to
none... so I was on my own.

I put off Archive and Install until I was at wits end... I hate doing it
and was disappointed when problem remained. I spent a couple of sessions
at Genius Bar with an excellent tech without success.

I don't know for sure what resolved problem... probably the combination
of above but the last thing I did was change the lease time factor and
problem went away... Jim
