Has anyone heard if Apple intends to redesign its desktop for intel's?
The thing I hate about the G5 desktops now is that they're too frickin
heavy.
... but have excellent handles!
The G4's had the handles that didn't cut into your skin 10 seconds
after lifting them.
G4 is air cooled 32bit CPU, G5 is 64 bit, watercooled (some models) CPU.
Anyway, how much time do you spend
carrying desktop computers around?
I work with them, so I guess my answer would be "not infrequently".
Find a friend to handle them seriously. I was once stupid to carry this thing to home from store (still wondering why!?) and I also have doctor bill near the Apple store bill to remind me not to do such a thing again :)
Of all the desktop features which
might be refined/improved over the G5 design I can't think that weight
comes very high on anyone's list.
Except that it goes hand-in-hand with the ungodly amount of space it
takes up, which, at my house, comes at a premium.
Besides, a redesign of what I consider to be their flagship product
would get Apple in the headlines again. ;)
G5 "desktop" is a wrong word IMHO. This thing is a workstation from the start. The features they plan for mactel workstations reminds me that you won't see a "light weight" white PC box too.
G5 gets hot, so does Xeon 64bit and the dual (or quad) core desktop CPUs they plan.
I see nobody misses the chance to call G5 "hot". Yes, it is very hot since it is a 64bit RISC CPU designed to run 24/7 without a failure, under 100% load.
If people are rich to buy them for their homes, it doesn't matter, it is still a professional workstation.
It should "stay" where it is setup. For "non staying", there is a thing called laptop :)
Did you carry a HP Kayak workstation? Now that things weight is real surprise ;)
