How do I connect speakers to dual-core Intel iMac?

My employer took away my iMac-G4 and replaced it with a dual-core Intel
iMac. But they didn't purchase new speakers to go with the old computer,
because our IT people told purchasing that the JBL Creature II speakers
I had would work the new Intel iMac.
But they don't. The Intel iMac seems to have an optical audio-out. The
jack from the JBL speakers fit in there, but I don't hear a damn thing.
The speakers worked with my iMac-G4.
Are the speakers broken (possible, they haven't been used in 6 months),
or is there an adaptor that I'm missing?
Thanks!
AC
