Re: Bluetooth failed after 10.3 -> 10.4

Hi Maz (and anyone else in this unfortunate position!)

I still have no idea what the problem was, it took brute force to cure
it. I copied everything to another hard disk (CCC) and then did an
erase and install. That fixed it, archive and install didn't. Makes me
wonder what bit of the system is left on the HD after an archive &
install.

The good news is that the erase and install option includes a helper
which will transfer all the user etc. info from the backupo disk (or
another Mac) so that made it easier. I rather wish now that I had gone
straight for the erase and install option as doing the archive option
removed all my printer etc installs so now I have to go back and sort
that out.

Thanks Maz!

I had the same trouble with menu bar items disappearing from 103.x to

Just no settings of the menu bar item would have much effect.

Repairing disk permissions never worked. DW3 didn't either.

Ultimately what did work was doing an Archive And Install Tiger
10.4.2 (which came with the computer) and then doing the Combo updater,
and Security Updates. Ever since I did that, all menu items have stayed
put for the most part since.

I have found that logging out or restarting every once in a while
does a world of good. I never restarted much before, but think it needs
to be done every once in a while.

I have kept hacking my system to a minimum now also, as I think that
had a bearing on the problems I had. I never reverted prior to updating.

I have just upgraded from 10.3.9 to 10.4.3 on a PowerBook G4. I had
some issues with a Keyspan USB server but their new drivers sorted that.
Otherwise all seemed to go well, however:

The Bluetooth icon is missing, and clicking on most of the menu bar
icons have no effect (Quickeys, Stuffit, and Norton icons still work,
Airport, sound, etc. don't, in fact everything to the right of where I
would expect the Bluetooth icon to be no longer works!). I am guessing
(working assumption) that the Bluetooth icon problem is somehow stopping
the other menu items as the underlying appplications (eg Spotlight) seem
to be working normally.

The Bluetooth preference pane comes up blank.

In the console log I can see blued crashing constantly. The log file
says:
Command: blued
Path: /usr/sbin/blued
Parent: configd [39]

Version: ??? (???)

PID: 3512
Thread: 0

Exception: EXC_BREAKPOINT (0x0006)
Code[0]: 0x00000001
Code[1]: 0x9293799c

with a load of additional state information.

I have deleted the bluetooth prefs.

The machine willl not shut down (or restart) unless I hold down the
power button for several seconds. The machine appears to restart
normally but the bluetoooth situation does not change.

I ran the Apple hardware test cd but as far as I can tell this does not
test the Bluetooth hardware. Anyway, Bluetooth was working fine in
Panther - doesn't rule out a hardware problem but makes it less likely.

But: the system profiler says "There was an error while gathering this
information" when I look for the Bluetooth module. But but: I can start
the machine from a firewire disk with the same OS and Bluetooth appears
fine. And when I do this, I can shut down the machine normally. So the
conclusion has to be that the hardware is OK and there's someting
screwed in the OSX install. But what?

I have reinstallled (normal install) 10.4.3 twice, no improvement.
Doesn't therefore seem to be much point in doing a Pacifist install of
the Bluetooth bits (assuming I could find them) unless there is
something I need to delete first.

I have run DiskWarrior and repaired permissions.

I had a quick look on macoshints - a few references to blued but nothing
that seemed to help.

I spent an interesting couple of hours browsing the Apple fora, without
finding anything helpful. On a hunch following something on the Apple
forum, I reset the PRAM, still no joy.

So, can anyone please suggest what to try next?

Many thanks (for reading this far <grin>)
