Just for the record, the command to get you out of that spot is:
reboot
You are in the Unix/BSD shell as root. There are a range of commands
and no safety barriers so don't go typing willy-nilly.

I was hoping someone had advice on why I even had to go to root level, as the normal method wasn't working!
