Which commands did you type that didn't work? This is the unix command
prompt, it doesn't appear that you were aware of that by your wording.
try reading the man page for passwd
localhost:/root # man passwd
after I got localhost:/root#
I responded
/sbin/mount -uw/ and then Return
There should be a "space" between "-uw" and "/".
I saw something saying this is an illegal command
then I typed
/usr/bin/nicl -raw/var/db/netinfo/local.nidb -create/users/username passwd
but substituted the user's short name for username
Again, a missing "space" character between "-create" and the path.
Also, for Mac OS X, "users" should be uppercase
no response
I typed
exit
no response
You were probably sitting in "input" mode, rather than in command mode.
