I am personally curious what happens if you install software on a disk

It's not pretty.
My home directory is on an automounted external drive and symlinked
into /Users/shortid
Without thinking I named a new drive to "Users" instead of "External".
There were HUNDREDS of "/Volumes/External/..." in my preferences.
Even if you carefully go through /Users/shortid when setting the
preference, the thing gets stored as something like
/Volumes/External/Users/shortid.
Next time i do this, I will mount the drive right overtop of /Users
or thereabouts, like God intended.
I never unplug it anyway, so no need for automount.
