1 How can a novice most easily learn the basics of using a MAC. There
is no original CD (which might have had a tutorial or users guide on
it.) Trial and Error is proving painful.
How do you best learn? If you like books, I'm sure there are piles of Mac OS books out there. Otherwise, Google is your friend. I'm guessing that Apple bundles some sort of "welcome to Mac" app. Try going to some Help function from the desktop.

Particularly to Select text. I use SHIFT + arrow to select one
character at
a time and Ctl+Shift + arrow (Or END or HOME) to select words or full
lines.
3. with this single button trackpad, is there no way to scroll down theNewer laptops have trackpad gestures that do this. Don't know about that PBook and Mac OS.
