I am running Tiger 10.4.5 on a dual-core G5 and my user account has
never ran smoothly since I migrated it from its panther running G4.

The main bad behaviour right now is from Flash 8 that gives me the
spinning ball on certain functions (eventually they come up, but they
take forever), but works perfectly in a test user account.

Also, my system preferences will suddenly not let me change (edit) the
account picture, and again it works fine in a test user account.

Suitcase 11 can't be quit without crashing (I have reinstalled it about
4 times already), it also gives the spinning ball for long periods when
loading fonts

I am also recently seeing two Helveticas in font menus in various
applications, even through I checked everywhere and I thought I cleaned
up duplicates.

I also have two classic systems installed, the one I installed freshly
on the computer would not work with Suitcase, and the old one that's
labeled as "System Folder (from old Mac)" didn't work until I installed
a fresh copy. (What a mess).

Oh, I also show a modem icon in the main Finder menu bar, can't get rid
of it since this computer doesn't have a modem (I guess it migrated with
whatever system preferences were there on panther).

I have tried to rule out everything --

I tossed out app preferences, ran preferential treatment (everything
checked out), I deleted/reset cache files for font book, user, and
system, verified fonts in font book, ran permissions, tossed out and
reinstalled programs... tried things in "safe mode" -- Nothing made a
difference.

I hesitate to reinstall the system, given that the problems are only
under this one user and I can't get rid of the user.

If everything works under a test user account, why not just become that
user? m.

Because all my files and everything are with the problem user. I've
always been that user... and if I drag everything over to another user,
wouldn't I be dragging the problems as well?

No, because you're not going to drag preferences, cache files, and the
other stuff that's causing the problem. You're just going to drag what
you know is yours.

Making a new user and migrating into it is a common solution to
problems. I do it quite often! It's quick and easy. m.
