For those of us running MAC OSX 10.4.4, is the upgrade to
10.4.5 free? If so where does one find it?

The update from Mac OS X 10.4.4 to Mac OS X 10.4.5 is directly linked
at http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosxupdate1045.html --
however, it is always best to run the built in "Software Update" feature under the Apple Menu

I disgree. I think it is always best to download the combo updater and
update from the installer. m.

I am talking from a standpoint of bandwidth preservation. Downloading
the combo updater and updating from that is fine too, if you don't mind
the larger downloads.

Generally speaking, unless some piece of software has been broken (like
the people installing hacked Front Row binaries and hosing their menu
bar/bezel services), there is not a particular difference between the
combo and delta updater. Software Update (the application) simply determines the smallest file that it thinks you need to download. But
yes, I appreciate your reasoning too, Matt.

But you don't know what my reasoning is. However, I will tell you this:
the "standpoint of bandwidth preservation" figures very, very, very
small in my list of priorites as to what consitutes "goodness" when
updating. Things like whether the update succeeds or fails, or whether
it screws up my system or not, loom far larger. I would say that the
flat claim "it [simply using Software Update] is always best", though it
may truly be what you believe, is misleading for users in general, and I
am concerned not to leave it uncorrected in the archives. m.

Righto, I understand your point (Matt). I used my psychic capability to attain what your reasoning was, but yes, it is also good that you state your preference for stability over small download size for archival purposes.

Let's look at it this way - for most people, their world will go on okay using Software Update.app. It's certainly the 80-20 thing to do.

There is no problem using the combo and delta updaters from the website, as we test that eventuality when deploying updates, and doing so perhaps has the pros that have been discussed in this thread by Matt.

As I pointed out to another poster (John Rethorst), this should not extend do archive-installing old software (10.4.0?) and updating to the latest in one shot -- I do not advise needlessly reversioning to older software. Doing things like that is more appropriate when troubleshooting.

So, for the record of this thread:

1. It is an acceptable practice to update using combo updaters from the website, and is certainly not a bad practice. The combo updaters to the latest version of the OS will ensure that you have the best files as of the date the update was released.

2. For most users, Software Update.app will be sufficient to ensure that the correct up-to-date software is applied to their system.

The choice of which method to use is an individual one. Obviously, if we didn't think Software Update.app was good, we wouldn't distribute it. And obviously, if we didn't think web-downloaded combo and delta updaters were useful for some instances or preferred by some users, we wouldn't distribute those. Something for everyone!

Cheers,

Bill
