Logged out and in, no help. Restarted, no help. Used disk utility to
verify disk and repair permissions, no help. So I turned it off for a
few hours, and now it's fine.
On OS < 10, turning the machine off for 5 or 10 minutes would fix it
when a restart would not. I didn't know X ever needed it.
I get something like that every now and then too but it's quite rare; I
can go for months w/o it happening. It's almost like I'm stuck in tar
where everything slows down so much. As far as I can tell, it seems to
occur while I am user the browser (I mostly use Firefox these days) but
I can't be sure of the correlation because it happens so rarely.
Logging out and clearing the Firefox cache usually resolves iI but it
just happened the other day and I had to shut down for a bit--- logging
out did not work. After flushing out the RAM chips and a restart,
everything was right as rain again. Usually, the only time I shut down
is for system updates, power outages and bad storms.
You might want to use Disk Warrior to build a new directory and perform
other repairs.
