That is all very interesting and piques my curiosity. I have installed
systems on two of my FW drives. They are not clones. They start my
Quicksilver just fine. Does this mean they would start my G3 and G4
iBooks as well? For some reason, I had always assumed that since I
installed the OS's *from* my quicksilver that they would be pretty much
tailored for the Quicksilver. Was I wrong?
Let me restate Neill's point because it's potentially very important: If
the system was constructed with the 'retail' install disks, you can use
the hard drive (Firewire or otherwise) to boot any supported Macintosh.
I think you're jumping to hasty and erroneous conclusions when the topic
here is "backup" disks and systems. No one is talking about installing
a single OS purchase on multiple computers or about using an OS bundled
on one computer to install on another. Sheesh. I was merely wondering
if my FW drive would start one of the iBooks in an emergency... like if
the iBook OS failed. And I think that was clear enough to *not* warrant
a lecture on software purchasing ethics from you.
What *I* was thinking about was all the system updates. I could swear
that I read here that you should not use the system updates downloaded
via Software Update to update other (different) Macs because the updates
are somehow tailored for your particular computer. So, to avoid having
to download system updates three different times over our meager dialup
connection, I've been downloading the Combo Updaters from the Apple
website, and then using those to update all three computers as well as
the systems on the FW drives.
So my question is this: If you are applying the system updates to your
FW drive that you've DLd via Software Update, can you still use that FW
drive to start other kinds of Macs should the need arise?

There's also the legal bit that one is supposed to purchase a retail
copy for each upgraded Mac system. Helps keep Apple in business.
That is for each Apple computer--- *not* for each system. Apple also
permits a backup copy. You might want to review the agreement yourself.
