This go around, I am going to try something you suggested years ago,
namely to avoid starting SSH from _within_ TB2, and instead start SSH
from Terminal.

Keep in mind that Netopia claims that their TB2 app' will not work at
all with SSH and PKA.

If TB2 will connect to and allow connections from a local port, the you
can set up the ssh tunnel outside the application. If TB2 denys access
to or refuses access from a local port, an ssh tunnel won't work.

I think they are wrong. ANY app' should work with SSH and PKA
engaged.

They may have disabled using local ports, except for their internal
setup, to prevent the unwise from initiating a TB2 session on the local
machine which might produce an infinite loop of screen updates.

I have one question to ask you.

After I start SSH from Terminal, is it okay to quit the Terminal
application, or will that automatically shut down SSH.

In other words, do I have to leave the Terminal app' open, before I
start TB2 ?

That depends on the command flags specified. For example, I use:

/usr/bin/ssh -L6000:ibook-g3:5900 -p 22 -N -t -x tms@ibook-g3

which is usually issued by the "SSHKeychain" application that I use on
all my machines.
