I finally got the DVD drive I'd been needing, so I did an OS X install

Everything seemed to work OK with OS X, but couldn't see my SCSI
drives (which had been working just fine under OS 9) -- only the ATA
ones.

Looked around, found the OS X driver for the Adaptec 2930C SCSI card (
on the Adaptec site). Install went fine. Still couldn't see the
drives, so I rebooted.

The Mac spent a huge amount of time on the grey screen with the little
"windmill" going around. Then went to a blue screen with the windmill
for a long time. Then a blue screen with a mouse cursor -- forever.

Reboot. Same thing.

Now what?

It sounds like the Adaptec SCSI driver is causing the problem. Try
starting up in safe mode by holding down the shift key at startup (just
like in Mac OS 9!). One of the things safe mode startup does is only
load the basic Apple kernel extensions, so the Adaptec driver shouldn't
be loaded.

Another option for trouble shooting is to press command-V at startup to
enter verbose mode. This displays the typical Unix scrolling screen of
messages showing which components are loading, and any error messages.
