That did the trick. Thanks -- could mount the other system just fine.
I also tried sharing the internet connection over the firewire link but
I couldn't get that to work (yes, I turned on internet sharing). But I
need to try a few other things before I give up on that. (a cryptic
message came up on one of the machines about some IP address already
being in use, so I need to check all of what's going on -- I was doing
this using my laptop connected to my wife's mini via firewire, and her
machine is connected to the net via wireless to the DSL router and I
really need to try it on my G4 which is connected to the router over
ethernet -- to which is attached a printer whose IP address was
automagically generated and I may need to check what's going on with
that.)

I've just been struggling with this. I have a dsl modem, connected
straight to the G4 tower, connected to the Internet via pppoe, and a G4
laptop connected via the firewire ports. I turned on "sharing from
Ethernet to Firewire" on the tower, and set up the laptop for DHCP and
it worked, and then it stopped, and then it worked again, and now it's
stopped again. Status says it's connected to the Internet, but it won't
go anywhere. I don't have the firewall turned on.

It's stupid and tiresome. I knew how to do this with Ethernet and a hub
....

So, look, if I turn on "Internet sharing" it runs natd and bootpd, sets
up the Firewire port:

inet 192.168.2.1 netmask 0xffffff00 broadcast 192.168.2.255

so do I still need to configure the Firewire port manually with that
address (192.168.2.1)?
