Irritating popping sound from speakers on 2 Macs...

I think I read something about this months ago, but can't find the
information. Now it's driving me crazy, so perhaps someone can help.
I have 2 machines running 10.4.4. One's a Quicksilver that's been
running X since about 10.3.3, and I don't recall the problem before
upgrading from 10.3.9 to 10.4.3 several months ago.
The second system is a new iMac G5 that's got a new 10.4.4 OS
installation, and which I built from scratch (ie, didn't use Migration
Assistant; installed/configured the OS and all apps from scratch).
The problem: I get a regular, pronounced "pop" from the speakers on both
machines. Happens with the internal speakers, with my SoundStick USB
set, and with JBL Encounter speakers connected via the Audio Out port.
It happens when I'm playing music with iTunes and when "nothing" is
happening. I have Interface Sound Effects turned off. I can't see
anything in the Pref Panes that seems to obviously affect this.
Has anyone experienced this and managed to fix it? It's driving me
crazy. Next week I'll call Apple (for the new iMac) and see if they can
help, but I'm betting that someone on this forum has a better answer
than I'll get from Apple.
Thanks for any help.
Abbott
