Others have pointed out that prices don't tend to vary a lot (except for
various "bundles", such as printers that you might not want. I've got a
printer next to me here that I still haven't plugged in, which I got for
"free" 6 months or so ago). However...

True though this might me in general, Amazon seems to regularly have
substantial rebates. Specifically, they have one on the Intel iMacs
right now. About $150 or so I think it was.

I hate rebates in general. But $150 is a bit of change. Oh yes, and
Amazon doesn't charge sales tax, which is worth about another $150 or so
in Cal. anyway. Ends up a pretty significant difference. I got my
month-old G5 iMac through Amazon.

Also, you can't customize that way. No big deal for things like memory
that you can add on later (apple's memory prices being notoriously
high). But if you wanted to customize things that aren't easy to do
later, you'll probably need to go direct to Apple. Fortunately, there
isn't really a lot in an iMac that you probably want to customize; it
comes pretty complete by default.

Don't forget to check the Apple edu store if you are eligible.

Yes there is such a thing. Up to you whether or not you want it. There
are also competitors, some free, the rest still significantly cheaper
than MS Office. But if you need the "real" MS Office for any reason, it
is available. And mostly you don't get a special deal for buying at the
same time, but I think MS Office might be an exception - look at the
Apple store and see if there is such an offer on now, I could check, but
I don't see the point in me doing it when you could just as well.
