Ancient Mac Dilemmas

One of my kids got a Nano for Xmas. Silly me, I should know that very
little is ever backwards compatable with Apple :-) I have an old G3 300
with 128 of PCI ram 6G ATA HD and I may bump the ram up in that and give it
to him to install 10.4.3 & connect to iTunes! But I am wondering if getting
a G4 would be smarter, given that he will be on DSL! He is 10 years old and
won't be doing much else other than WP! I have many older generation macs
(read relics) such as 7600s, 7200s, 8500s, Performas, Quadras,etc. that I
guess are dead in the water with respect to OSX! I have been out of the Mac
loop for a while. I am also thinking for getting a G5. What is the best
deal on a expandable upgradeable G4/G5 that is selling around still new in
the box at a good deal??? BTW, can I install OSX over 8.6 and if so will I
wipe out anything or will everything that opened in 8.6 open in the classic
environment? I have 9.0 and can upgrade but have been leary as I am
concerned about wiping out existing stuff! It is my only ISP connection
right now! Long story. Thanks for any advice.
