Displaying (short) list of network users in loginwindow

I'm setting up an LDAP server at home (running on my Linux file
server), and plan to move local accounts into LDAP for authentication,
identification, home directory mounts, etc., etc.

We only have a few accounts (my wife and I, and a few "guest" accounts
for frequent houseguests). I'd like for those accounts to show up in
the graphical list of users at login, rather than requiring the user to
type in their user id.

I'm gathering that this is possible, and have even found a few defaults
settings that might be related, but simply can't make it happen. I
think that, if you're using MacOSX Server, it's trivial, but I can't
find any documentation, anywhere, of whatever .plist or netinfo
settings the Server pushes down to the clients to make the users show
up.

Can anyone point me in the right direction? (I'll also need to figure
out how to define the users' pictures, but that's moot until they show
up in the list to begin with).

Thanks!

david.
