I had this happen to me once under Panther, and there was no way to fix
it that I could find. Someone more unix-friendly than me could maybe
have figured it out, but for me it became the one and only time under
Mac OS X that I actually had to reinstall the OS because of a defective
function. Now it works, through TIger 10.4.3. I still don't know what
actually went wrong.
