Encrypt the backups in Retrospect, if that's what you're storing on the
portable drive. If you didn't create the backup saveset with encryption
enabled, then you will need to delete it and start over -- this is an
option that can only be set when the backup saveset is created.

If you are simply copying your home directory to the external drive, use
Disk Utility.app to make a disk image from a volume or directory (namely,
your home directory). When you're prompted for the disk image's name and
location, store it on the external drive, and turn on AES-256 encryption.
You'll then be prompted (twice) for a password before Disk Utility.app
actually starts copying data.

As others have mentioned, make sure you pick a decent password.
