G4 CD/DVD Drive Won't Read DVDs

I just found out that my G4 (running 10.3.9) won't read DVDs any more,
including movies and blank disks. The drive has no problems whatsoever
with CDs. In fact, I burned a CD-ROM last night and I was able to use
it again this morning.
A few weeks ago, I burned a set of DVDs for storing some very large PDF
files and had no difficulties in doing so. I recall looking at a movie
DVD a few days later, so I don't think that burning those disks was the
cause.
I used DiskWarrior and Drive 10 to check and repair the hard drive a few
times, so I'm wondering whether a file that the DVD reader/burner needs
in order to operate might have been corrupted. On the other hand,
whenever I put in a DVD now, I hear the drive grinding a bit at first
and then quieting down, so perhaps it's a mechanical problem (I've had
my machine for over four years).
I checked System Preferences, and it's properly set. I ran Disk Utility
and checked and repaired file permissions. Unfortunately, I haven't
found anything in Mac Help which specifically deals with this situation,
though I did come across something related to it on a MacInTouch site.
According to System Profiler, I've got a Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-103 (Rev.
1.90).
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
