New Accounts Don't Work

Not an OS X expert so I may be missing something really simple...

I am trying to add an account on my iMac (OS X 10.3.9) for our nanny.
I have also thought it a good idea to have a non-admin account for
everyday use to prevent me from doing something stupid when I am half
asleep (maybe that's just my windows paranoia:) ).

It appears that I can set up a new account, but when I try to log in
with it, it won't work. It just sits there and says "Logging In" with
the sideways barberpole running. I can walk away for 15 minutes and
come back to find it still "Logging In." I have to shut off the
machine to stop it and power back up to log back in as myadminself.

Never been able to get an additional account to work.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Curtis
