I don't have any problems with my iMac connecting to a Netgear 834G. I
don't think there is a general problem using third party combined
ADSL/cable modem, router, hub, wireless access point boxes. I used to
get brief dropouts around lunchtime, which went away when the old
microwave in the next apartment was replaced (I hate to think how much
it must have been radiating).

If you are in an urban area, especially if you are in an apartment
block, it may be worth finding a copy of MacStumbler or iStumbler and
checking signal levels, and whether other networks are visible and on
the same channel. You may want to change from your default wireless
channel to a less used one.
