I've used every released version of Mac OS and a few that weren't. The
Find feature you're describing was fairly simple but it was not
particularly fast and not ask flexible as Spotlight

I think this is the problem. Spotlight indexing is not simply a
brute-force index of the content of the files. It can, with appropriate
plugins, allow searching on any identifiable information about the file.
Dimensions, resolution and color space of pictures. Authors of
documents. Usage histories. Number of items contained in folders. Mail
headers. ....
