My old SCSI Umax scanner just died, which was welcomed, since I upgraded my computer from my old 8600 to a Mac Mini on 10.4.2. I only scan documents occasionally.. It's a convenience that I like to have around for those times when nothing else will quite do.
What are your recommendations for a good personal scanner with optimum resolution, minimum headaches, and at nominal cost?
And here's another thought: I have been considering upgrading my old Canon C555 fax/printer/scanner combo. It's still working, but I would just *love* to have a reasonably-priced HP laser combo machine that would also scan with good resolution too. Is this doable or am I better advised to just buy a scanner?
TIA for your recommendations on this.
I use canon lide 20 here, its amazingly cheap and works like a charm.
The "lide" is a name of technology Canon developed. It uses less power than my mouse! So it means it doesn't need any sort of external power.
Remember you are on mac. Even PC users have problems with those "combo" things. I suggest you buy a Canon Lide and buy printer separately.
Of course if you have real space concern, go for a combo device. Just use the best OS X supporting one. e.g. did they update their driver for Tiger immediately? What are non trolls on versiontracker saying? One of best test is: Does printer company mention "gimp drivers" for supporting their printers in Tiger? :) I love my Epson colour laserjet C1100 but I see it does not have a pure tiger compatible driver. They rely on "printing has not changed much" and for unlucky guys which their driver not compatible? "GIMP printer drivers".
Result? I don't see "Epson status monitor" launched when I print. Not a big deal, printer got own LCD but sign of future potential problems.
Its all drivers. A good driver can make a printer producing much better results than other. Even if specs are same. Same goes for Scanner too. Well, Mr. Hamrick's Vuescan Pro running here.
Have a nice day
