The immediate reply was clearly the result of a few minutes of
searching, all with obvious, top-level hits.
In this case it is usual, and warranted, to mention this to the OP upon
reply. These Unix geeks you speak of have been doing this for a long
time, and the ad hoc rules have always been clear and fair. About the
only thing that has changed is that people used to ignore posts like
this outright.
The compromise you are searching for is for people to get into the
practice of a little due diligence and do the simple stuff first. I
have a refrain I use a lot at work. I don't mind people asking for
help, but I do mind if you come to me unprepared and expect me to do the
legwork.
It's a pithy saying, but worthwhile in context: "Be a solution bringer,
not a problem giver."
I'm not looking to get into a pissing match here, but I think it's
reasonable for people to learn to do a few minutes of research first.
