I usually provide my resume as both a PDF document and an RTF document.
The latter can be read by Macs and PCs very easily, and without assuming
that the recipient has a product like Microsoft Word (which doesn't come
with any flavor of Windows or Mac OS X). It also avoids any possible
security problems that smart people should be concerned about when handling
Word documents. Best of all, RTF can easily be imported into Word, and on
Windows systems where that product is installed, it may become the default
application for *any* file ending in ".rtf". Clueless users who can't
understand any document that can't be read or edited in Word will find this
easy and reassuring.

RTF docs, however, do not avoid the font problem that a PDF would solve.
But that has already been addressed in another reply.

It would be nice if there was a list of what fonts ship with what flavors
of Windows, along with a simple font sampler. This issue has come up with
me when designing web pages with style sheets, as I don't have any Windows
boxes here to test them out on. My first font family choice is usually
something that ships with Mac OS X, but my second (fallback) choice is
always a similar and/or attractive font family that is available on a stock
Windows box.
