Some Macs don't support slave drives at all. But I'm not trying to slave the Quantum.
Um. You're not?
What kind of PowerMac and how are the stock and transplanted drives physically connected to the machine? (Two connectors on one cable or ...?)

StarMax. Similar to PowerMac 4400 series. Tanzania board. Two IDE connectors on motherboard. Supports only one single drive per connector/cable. You cannot have a master/slave arrangement in these machines.
All I'm doing is disconnecting a single IDE drive (not the boot drive obviously) and connecting the Quantum in it's place. Very simple procedure. And normally not a problem. I actually have two StarMaxes and I've changed out various drives in these machines many times without a hitch. I've tried the Quantum in both machines without success.
With the Quantum connected (in either machine) the machine boots almost all the way but then freezes right at the point where you start to see the desktop but all the icons and menus aren't there yet, just the clock showing. It sticks right at the point at which all the connected drives (and various other icons) would normally begin to appear on the desktop. I suspect there is something going on that is causing a snag right at that point.
