Can anybody clear this up for me? Do I really need USB 2.0, and if so does it have to be built-in? Or does USB 2.0 only have some advantages, and if so, what advantages?

should tell you much of what you need to know. The main advantage of USB2.0 is the ability to transfer up to 480megabits/second, a little above 40MegaBytes/second.
USB 1.1 can go up to 12Megabits/second, or around 1MegaByte per second. This means if you have the lowest spec 2GB iPod nano you could be waiting more than half an hour to fill it with music. The USB2.0 connection could do it in about a minute on a good day, probably a little longer in reality.
