I avoided this problem by

1. Don't use Apple's Prefpanes for sharing or firewall.

2. Write my own rules that make all the machines on my LAN
   wide open to each other and tightly closed to the rest
   of the world.

I like Apple and GUI, but the notion that one checkbox can
set up the One True Way that is perfect for every possible
person on every possible network just isn't true.
