Two things to say:
1) Mac OS X comes reasonably securely set up, right out of the box. It
has most services switched off, and the root account is not enabled. If
you want to be even more safe, make a separate Admin-enabled account,
then turn off admin privileges for your regular account, and leave the
admin account logged off when not using it. That way, it is very hard to
abuse the machine even if you should be able to reach it from outside.
2) The firewall's GUI interface is found in System Preferences -->
Sharing --> Firewall. If you like the command line and are familiar with
it, the firewall is based on the more or less standard ipfw, commonly
found onm *nix systems.
But I leave mine turned off. :-)
